Biodegradable polymers are designed to degrade upon disposal by the action of living organisms. The need to create alternative biodegradable water-soluble polymers for products such as detergents and cosmetics has taken on increasing importance.Since natural fibers are cheap and biodegradable, the biodegradable composites from biofibers and biodegradable polymers will render a contribution in the next century due to serious environmental problem. Manufacture of biodegradable composites from such biodegradable plastics will enhance the demand of such materials.

Although some portion of polymers can be recycled, there are polymers which take thousands of years to biodegrade.Poly (lactic acid), or PLA, is a biodegradable polymer that has received significant attention because of its ability to decompose in the relatively short timeframe of six months to two years. But PLA is significantly more expensive than a traditional polymer derived from oil, and is also very brittle. Industrial biodegradable packaging that could simply be left to decompose, eliminating landfill waste, and the costs associated with hauling it away and disposing of it is also cheap. These kinds of creativity in utilizing natural resources that will drive us towards the next generation of green materials have to be implemented.

They are used either as a direct replacement for traditional plastics or as blends with traditional plastics. All bio-based and petroleum-based plastics are technically biodegradable, meaning they can be degraded by microbes under suitable conditions.
